The Writing Hour
It's a well known fact (well known to me anyway) that you've only got so many good writing hours in you. For me it's about one hour every day, and that hour usually happens between 9:00 and 10:00 am. If I'm lucky, it might stretch 'til noon. After lunch -- whether I've eaten anything or not -- I'm basically useless when it comes to getting anything written. I can only stare blankly at the wall, or obsessively check the CNN headlines to see if anything historically significant has happened.
That's my excuse for the recent lack of entries to this blog. I've been finishing a paper, and spending my good writing hour each day on that. And while I'm on the subject, why is it that bloggers feel the need to apologize for their recent lack of entries? It's a curious compulsion. Sort of like starting out every email with, "Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, but...." Most of my emails need to get written during the writing hour as well. If I haven't responded to your message within seconds of having received it, it probably means that you're going to have to wait until tomorrow's writing hour. Some day, when I've got the time, I'm going to write more about that....

Things For Free
And now for something completely different: a modest project documenting things I'll pay for and things I feel I'm entitled to for free. So, to start things off, one of the things to which, as an American, I have a God-given right...for free: FIRE.
